What is a podcast ?
Definition
A podcast is a structured webpage which may be interpreted by softwares
called aggregators (iTunes is one of them). These structured files
include, for instance, descriptions of broadcast radio shows and links
to sound files (mp3 files) allowing to play them. Some software can
place these files and their description on an MP3 player, an iPOD or one
of the most recent cellphones (SmartPhone, PocketPC, 3G, etc.).
The same principle is applied to webcast video files. Players exist but
are quite rare.
One of the main advantages is the possibility to pick the program of
your choice and listen to it when YOU want, as many times as you wish.
All you need is an internet connection (you are no longer bound by the
power of a radio station or a TV cable network) and a software capable
of reading podcast files. Podcasting is open to all !
Many podcasts can be found through the websites of radio stations,
blogs, specialized websites, etc. The sources are multiple and infinite.
In practice, you need to copy/paste the link found on the website into
your media-playing software to access the information. This extreme
simplicity contributes to the success of this new way of broadcasting.
